7 things you must do in Liverpool

I had the pleasure of visiting the wonderful city of Liverpool in June, a place ive visited a number of times over the last six years but for the very first time as an eager tourist ready to see every last thing the city has to offer. We all know how unbelievably easy it is to get to Liverpool from Ireland with flights as little as €20 return with Ryan Air and a flight of only 50 minutes or less, its almost a sin not to plan a trip to our neighbour Liverpool taking both of these factors into account. Its a city full of culture, beautiful architecture and lets not forget a destination renowned for its hens, stags and epic parties. You’ll be guaranteed to get a huge bargain for yummy cocktails which is a refreshing change when you live in Dublin. I was determined not only to have the best girls weekend possible but to make the most of my spare time by taking in the sightseeing and i will also admit to catching The Beatles fever over the three day trip. I was so lucky to be blessed with gorgeous sunny weather and you can pretty much walk everywhere in fifteen to twenty minutes, or if your feeling lazy taxis are very cheap. The one thing you cant hide from is the Liverpool people and you will find yourself feeling right at home, especially if your Irish.

1) Do it cheap

We all love a bargain and this is definitely the destination to grab a few. Travelling doesn’t have to break the bank and Liverpool is such an achievable city to visit filled with many sightseeing opportunities, great restaurants, activities and i cant forget to mention amazing selfie backdrops. Not only can you fly for next to nothing if you are savvy but you can also grab great hotels deal. I was determined to take advantage of all this deals saving me money to have more fun over the three day trip. One great option is Holiday Inn Express Liverpool you can stay there for less than €100 which includes your breakfast, i had a super stay with them and the staff and location really made this a great resting spot. It is located in Albert Dock which is the place to be especially if atmosphere and culture is what you are looking for. Like i mentioned above Liverpool is the place to grab a bargain from flights, accommodation to with drinks and shopping.

2) Check out Albert Dock

Albert Dock has had quite a journey from a derelict location, to warehouse dock then the major face lift and regeneration in 1982. It has won many awards and hosts a massive list of exciting events and is home to some of Liverpool’s best bars, restaurant, tourist attractions and views. I spent a lot of time in Albert Dock as i was very lucky to have booked The Holiday Inn Express there which meant it was a bit of a base for me. You will find so much to do here and my only regret is not making some time to do some water sports which looked like so much fun.

During my time in Albert Dock i visited a pirate inspired restaurant which was more than just a novelty for a self confessed adult who never grew up, but an opportunity to get my fill of some typical British food like pie and mash. The Smugglers Cove is one to put on your list for its tongue smacking food and pirate theme.

3) Experience The Beatles

Ill be genuinely honest and admit that i wouldn’t be a so called Beatles fan and i never really gave them much consideration over the years. Regardless you cant deny the sheer talent and magnitude of this band and everybody knows their music. You cant visit Liverpool and not throw yourself head first into Beatles fever and there is a huge amount of things to do including The Beatles Story which is also located in Albert Dock, the largest Beatles exhibition in the world where you can walk through the entire journey of The Beatles from creation to a remade Cavern Club. You can also jump on the The Magical Mystery Tour which again leaves from Albert Dock which takes you across Liverpool where you can visit places like Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and see where entire band grew up. Really great photo opportunities and chance to see the real Liverpool, we also had many laughs with our tour guide who was the brother of Holly Johnson lead singer of Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

4) Go to a cocktail making class

Yes i am the ultimate fit chick but that being said i know when to let my hair down and when there is a family hens on the cards you can be sure ill be lined up for the madness. I was really blown away at how much fun it was to take part in a cocktail making class, even if you are a simply a small group of three or four be sure to sign your name up and get ready for laughs. Also known as a mixology masterclass and can be booked with food or without and typically costs £25 and includes endless cocktail drinking.

I visited Revolution for my first ever cocktail masterclass, more information here / Revolution Bar Liverpool

5) Check out the architecture, its free

I am a bit of an architecture fiend which probably comes from my years spent in art college and you cant deny how epic a great building looks on Instagram. Liverpool has ENDLESS amounts of striking buildings and here are the ones that i made time to visit

  • The Liverpool Anglican Cathedral
  • Pier Head and the three graces
  • St Georges Hall
  • William Brown Library and Museum
  • North Western Hall
  • Walker Art Gallery
  • The Royal Liver Building
  • Mann Island Buildings

The list doesn’t end there and the best thing to do is get some comfortable shoes on and get walking, you will discover all kinds of architectural delights along the way.

6) Eat and Drink

I enjoyed a weekend full of food and drink over the course of the three days i visited a huge list of bars, cafes and restaurants and one that really stood out was NY Liverpool ! It was literally my last stop in Liverpool before i made my way to the airport and it couldn’t have been a nicer way to finish an amazing weekend. If i’m going to dabble in a cocktail my ultimate drink is an espresso martini and NY Liverpool more than delivered when it comes to quality. The layout is very modern and its perfect for large groups like a hens or a girls weekend.

7) Fall in love with art

You dont need to be an art lover like me to go and experience some culture, plus if you get stuck in a rain shower which is always a possibility then jumping into somewhere like the Tate is ideal. The Tate Liverpool is also located in Albert Dock and you will find a huge amount of exhibitions, artists and designers here at The Tate. We decided to drop in to check out the Francis Bacon show and Maria Lassnig (Self Portrait below)
